Just to try... Is the kernel 2.4.13 from Mandrake or from www.kernel.org?
Is it possible they (Mandrake) made a mistake while preparing the kernel for MDK 8.1? My MDK 2.4.13 kernel is working fine with the CD but I remember I had a weird mouse problem with mdk kernels that didn't appear in the default kernel.org version. (I didn't try to enable USB support and devfsd on the kernel.org, on the other hand....)
