The plot thickens...

>From what you've told me below, the mouse driver is unable to find the
PS2 style mouse port in your system.

This could be either due to a hardware conflict, or again to bad RPM's
from a BAD CD.

If you computer worked with 7.2 it's unlikely to be a conflict (although
it still may be...) so we are back to a bad CD.

Unfortunately certain core applications are installed by the Mandrake
installer. There is little checking to see if they failed to install
properly due to bad RPM's.

I've seen the install SEEM to suceed, when in fact it failed on serveral
very important RPMS, such as the the one that makes or the "nodes" for
hardware devices.

It sounds like this is what has happened to you.

The GPM service is unable to find a psaux port...

Try

"ls -l /dev/misc"

To see if the port was created by Linux at boot.

Then try

"service gpm stop"
"service gpm start"

There is your problem.

|Hi Jose,
|
|I have another round after receipt of your last email as follows :
|
|At 12:18 PM 10/22/2001 -0400, you wrote:

|
|In BIOS, on PNP and PCI setup page
|
|Item PNP OS Installed : NO (already selected)
|
|>"safe mode???".

|
|I meant "failsafe"

|
|After KDE started as user, I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1 changing to test
|mode. Login in again as root. Started level 3 by typing "init 3".
|
|Typed mouseconfig and then pressed "Enter" bringing up the mouse
|configuration window.
|
|My mouse is a A4 Tech 3 button-wheel PS/2 mouse. But I was
|not allowed to
|select either PS/2 standard mouse or PS/2 three button wheel mouse
|mode.  Each time following warning pop-up ;
|
|Shutting down console mouse service [Failed]
|Starting console mouse service : gpm : oops () invoked from
|gpm.c (1028)
|/dev/psaux : No such device or address [OK]
|
|What software/command I missed installed ???
|
|In my limited test on Mandrake-Linux 8.1 (because I am not used to
|key-combination without a mouse) I found it worked properly.
|On KDE all
|icons displayed on desktop automatically after PC started.
|Netscap can be
|evoked.
|
|In executing "Halt" command to shut down, the PC hanged
|forcing me to press
|Ctrl-Alt-Del to re-start the PC. Then Kill command started
|showing all
|"OK" except follow;
|
|Shutting down console mouse service [Failed].
|
|Finally the PC re-started
|
|Through out the last whole week I still could not find the cause to my
|problem. However my PC and hard disc works perfect when I re-install
|Mandrak-Linux 7.2 which was also downloaded from a FTP site to
|a Windows
|box and burnt there with Easy CD Creator.
