Hi all, yet again,,

I found and fixed the problem, it seemed to be related to ApacheJServe, it
gave an error about missing jdk, so I went looking for it in packagemanager,
no sign,, couldn't find it anywhere, so I removed JServ and low and behold
it worked...

apache is running...

So I have two supplimentary questions..

Whats the name of Software manager, so I can run it from an Xterm... (or via
ssh -X)

If Jserve is included in the distro, what are its requirements, and whats
the jdk its asking for, (I am assuming its on the CD's somewhere...)

thanks, and regards

Frank

Subject: [expert] Out of my league with apache here.. much
desperate...!!!!!

Hi people,

I had a working apache server here, hosting 6 domain names and workin just
fine...

Then I ran mandrake software update (incidently, if I want to run that from
an xterm, whats it called??)

anyway, I noticed apache in there needing updating, (I heard not to because
of SSL issues, but I don't use SSL, so I figured it didn't matter... also,
the reports I heard said that the buggy ones were being removed, so I
assumed they had been fixed since that was a week ago..)

anyway, software update downloaded and upgraded my apache, and toasted it..
I get nothing when I try to start it..

it starts http-perl no worries, but I get three instances of [PASSED] when
it tries to start http itself...

Nothing shows up in /var/log/httpd/error_log, or /var/log/syslog, or
/var/log/messages no refference to the problem at all...

A test of the config states that httpd is "syntatically correct" ditto for
httpd-perl so no problems there....

So I was lost for what to do.. so I removed the lot of them with this:

rpm -e --nodeps apache
rpm -e --nodeps apache-common
rpm -e --nodeps apache-devel
rpm -e --nodeps apache-manual
rpm -e --nodeps apache-mod_perl
rpm -e --nodeps apache-mod_perl-devel
rpm -e --nodeps apache-suexec
rpm -e --nodeps ApacheJServ

Ok, so I got rid of all the new rpms that had appeared in /var/cache/grpmi

Then I reinstalled the lot of them from the CD's,,, didn't work, same
problem.

so I removed them again using the above method, and this time I also deleted
/etc/httpd manually and /var/log/httpd

reinstalled again, and again, same problem, error_log hasn't even reappeared
in /var/log/httpd (I am assuming that doesn't get created until apache is
running.. (tried creating it manually as well.)

Then, as a last ditch effort, I went to my other server, which has a working
apache, (same version) and the same config as this one is supposed to
have... and I tarred /etc/httpd and /usr/include/httpd and /use/lib/httpd
and copied it to the non working server and overwrote the old files,
(according to the messages all the files where the same size and
age...(except for the config files of course...)

anyway, I figured that that would work for sure, since I have pretty much
replaced the whole apache...

no luck,, nothing, nada, zippo,, same error message, [PASSED] and no other
indicators as to the cause of the problem...

The same server is currently running amavis/postfix and delivering mail for
the domains just fine...
all the virtual interfaces are up and working... so I can't see the problem
for this...

The /etc/hosts resolve.conf network scripts everything is the same as the
backup server it replaced..(I know becuase I keep regular backups of the
files in tar format... )

Most importantly /etc/httpd/conf stuff is all identical to the working
backup server as well...

There has to be something that the upgrade did to something on the system to
have killed it...

Is there ANY way at all I can try to figure out whats going on??? its
driving me nuts and I am goin to get slammed for this if I can't get it
working tomorrow.....

please!!! any, and I mean ANY suggestions would be kindly regarded,, hell,
I'd marry your sister for some help on this...:-)

regards

Frank
