Replying to self (sorry!) I burned an audio CD prior to burning the 8.1 CDs... I don't remember turning on "Pad tracks"; but it was on... I burned two sets of CDs and other than the md5sum mismatches, each pair produced identical md5sums raising my confidence that the CDs are fine.
In case someone else makes the same gaffe, here are the md5sums when 30KB (30720) of padding is added to the CD... d7106bfa3bf6399cfdecf682150bcc27 CD1 ef4501f44740a4037943a2492897e257 CD2 463b4fdec962f002ba117fc9e471dca7 CD3 and just in case the type of CD matters: 50 Pack ValuLife(tm) CD-R (74Min/650MB) by Verbatim xcdroast reports: Disk type: Long strategy type (Cyanine, AZO or similar) Manuf. index: 11 Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation Hope this helps someone else as I wipe the egg off my face... :> Pierre I wrote: > > Hi, > > Sorry if this has already been covered; but I didn't find it in the > expert/cooker archives. > > Thinking I'd just created a couple of coasters, I was surprised to see that each > CD's md5sum, while not matching those in the "md5sums" file, were consistent > between "coasters"... > > Investigation showed that xcdroast adds some "pad data"... here's the relavent > output from CD1: > > Track 01: writing 30 KB of pad data. > Track 01: Total bytes read/written: 679673856/679704576 (331887 sectors). > expected size of CD ^^^^^^^^^ > actual size of CD ^^^^^^^^^ > > The extra padding causes a different md5sum.
