What I can't figure out is why KDE and Gnome are both worse than Win98
these days when it comes to speed/performance. It's kind of
embarrassing, really.

Yes, the whole "no longer need to reboot just because an application is
misbehaving" issue -- does rather put things in perspective, yes? OTOH,
when I went to test this same setup on my desktop PC, Evolution manages
to lock my system hard, so it won't even respond to network requests! I
don't know what is going on, but I have actually been forced to
hard-reboot, because keyboard, mouse, and network were all
non-responsive. Ugh -- I'm just glad this happened at home, and not at a
customer site where I praised the stability of Linux. Of course, I would
never load such a beta product on a production machine anyway -- well,
except my laptop, but I figured I could restore it easily enough, so I
wasn't too worried about giving Ximian a try.
