Cardex ET6100 PCI video. Intel TX chipset. MMX 233 CPU. 128 Mb RAM.

When boot finally finishes, on tty1 following the initial login prompt
is as follows:

* * *
Winbond Super-IO detection, now testing ports 3F0,370,250,4E,2E ...
SMSC Super-IO detection, now testing Ports 2F0, 370 ...

Press <return> to continue.
INIT: Switching to runlevel: 3
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
* * *

tty7 screen is blank with blinking cursor in upper left corner. Other
tty's produce expected login prompts that work as expected except for a
welcome surprise: video mode instead of the customary 80 X 25 is the
proprietary Tseng 100 X 40 mode. Awesome!

This machine has a working installation of Mandrake 7.1 on SCSI, so
hardware should not be a problem. This install is on IDE, but otherwise
identical hardware. Install seemed to proceed to conclusion graphically
without incident.

# telinit 1

puts up the graphical mode for boot & init messages, then system
response disappears except for CAD.

Inspected /etc/lilo.conf on reboot, finding config=linux containing
vga=788 and append="quiet". Removing quiet and changing vga to normal
almost produced a working runlevel 5. Most of KDE desktop painted, but
Kandall's useful tips didn't finish painting. When I tried with mouse
the application starter, the popup menu only drew partially. From then,
mouse cursor and keyboard response disappeared. Neither Ctrl-Alt-BS nor
any other Ctrl-Alt combinations do anything.

I rebooted and ran XF86Config. No change to broken KDE. Search at
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/ produced no help. What do I do now?

TIA
