Actually, I am using Amavis with postfix, and I can tell you a couple of
things.

1. with postfix setup is easy as....
2. It will work with perl 5.6.0 its just that CPAN tries to upgrade perl for
you, I downloaded the 6 perl modules manually and installing them manually
and it worked flawlessly on standard 7.2mdk perl 5.6.0
3. It has run flawlessly since I set it up, no reboot nothing, it uses
buggar all memory until you send something through.
4. The perl modules are there to enable among other things to do
decompression of different compressed file types, I think that you will not
find too many applications that will scan as many compressed file types as
amavisd.

I used to use sendmail on our networks for ages, thought I'd try Postfix for
the speed and security implications.. never looked back, it works with all
our cgi scripts just like sendmail did, the aliases are even the same, and
most of the sendmail commands will work as well...

and since postfix supports content filtering without a milter and a compile,
why not use it?

I haven't looked back, (postfix is very easy to setup and their mailing list
is one of the busiest I am on, and they are all really helpful.)

why not use it?

Yeah; I'm using it with Amavis... It works by dissecting the mail
into its attachments, unzipping etc where necessary, then handing the
bits over to third-party scanners such as McAfee UVscan.

However, it's a royal pain to set up, and wants all sorts of Perl modules
(and Perl 5.6.01) and hand-tweaks to Sendmail. In short, not the stuff
I'd want running if I'm not around to keep an eye on it.
