You know the question: which came first, the chicken or the egg? Well,
it looks like I have troubles whose solutions depends on solutions that
depend on the solutions . . . .
This 128 Mb SIMMs TX chipset MMX 233 system, in an all Symbios SCSI (no
IDE) configuration, has working installations of Corel 1.1, RedHat 6.1,
& Mandrake 7.1 all on one 9 Gb IBM SCSI HD. I disabled scan of the IBM
HD and another HD, leaving only one HD and the CD reader active on the
SCSI bus, and then put a 40 Gb IBM udma100 HD on the motherboard's
udma33 controller. Either configuration boots DOS and OS/2 without
apparent problems, including the SCSI CD.
Mandrake 8 failed to install. Upon failure, shortly after the installer
asked for CD #2, it directed me to use an installed system to execute:
rpm -qpl Mandrake/RPMS/*.rpm
When I booted into Mdk 7.1 to do this, it produced a flood of both
stdout and stderr messsages, mixed with SCSI error messages, so I had to
redo each CD and send the messages to files.
I looked in /var/log/messages. That file ends when last boot completed.
Where are the SCSI error messages logged? I don't see anything in
/var/log that looks like would contain them.
*Question 1-If this isn't automatic by default, how can SCSI error
logging be enabled?
The stdout log didn't seem to have any trouble, and was apparently
nothing but a list of CD packages found. The stderr produced what looks
like the same message for each file found, (a sample of the voluminous
output):
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of
RPM
query of Mandrake/RPMS2/7colors-0.80-1mdk.i586.rpm failed
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of

query of Mandrake/RPMS2/abisuite-0.7.14-0.2mdk.i586.rpm failed
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of

query of Mandrake/RPMS2/alsa-lib-devel-0.5.10-2mdk.i586.rpm failed
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of
RPM
query of Mandrake/RPMS2/zsh-doc-3.1.9-6mdk.i586.rpm failed
*Question 2-How do I query the CD without getting these messages?
After downloading the ISO's, the md5sums were used to confirm their
validity. When burning, no other activities were being done, and no
error messages were generated to indicated possible coaster generation.
After the install failure, I tried using MC to copy the entire #2 CD
Mandrake directory to a mounted ext2 with plenty of freespace. This
completed without any apparent errors.
*Question 3-Is there some other way to verify the newly burned CD is
valid?
Packages selected for installation were:
Office Workstation
Internet Station
Network Computer (client)
Configuration
Console Tools
Docs
Web/FTP
Network Computer (server)
KDE
Gnome
Other Graphical Desktops
Since there were no errors prior to inserting the #2 CD, it appears the
problem may be the CD rather than the CD reader or a SCSI bus problem.
The installer doesn't indicate in package selection from which CD the
packages come.
*Question 4-Which of the selected packages, if any, can be removed from
selection in order to prevent the need for CD #2?
*Question 5-Any suggestions?
