Bob,

You are on very dangerous ground here take it from one who has been
there and done that!!!

If you must try it get the source rpm*-tar.gz package. I used the Redhat
one as at the time the Mandrake one was not available (well at least I
coudln't find it).
If you can only get an RPM type source package then unpack it using
rpm2cpio and then install the source tree. Do NOT do anything like rpm
build and then install you will almost certainly hose all your RPM
facilities. Instead compile the package as you would a normal source
package making ABSOLUTELY sure that it will install itself in
/usr/local/bin (check the makefiles or sometimes ./configure --help |
less will tell you where the default install is going to be.
You can then run the package from the command line within the
/usr/local/bin/ directory. If /usr/local/bin is in your path make sure
at least that is after your /usr/bin/ path. Don't be surprised if the
rebuid db command doesn't work it won't as the filenames were changed in
V4. I didn't risk renaming mine I just ran with two databases and
managed the dependancies manually.

To be honest you would be better off upgrading to 8.0 it is infinately
better. Don't be put off by some of the bad-mouthing thats gone on the
realease is pretty sound. The installation is smooth as long as you have
pretty standard networking hadware. If you haven't then check the
archives as there are a few wrinkles with the control centre network
configuration interface. If you are unsure ask the list Civileme is
about again and knows pretty much all ther is to know. I've been through
the problems of network hardware on this release too so if you need help
in this area please write.
