Hi All,

I am using a HP Colorado 14Gig tape drive unit for backup. I do not want
bells or whistles on backup progs, so I am writing a simple perl script to
run backup for me.

However, if I have a system crash, hard drive or similar, and are prepared to
reinstall the OS (Mandrake 8), what OS root directories would I need to
backup in order to re-instate my old system from tape. I would always backup
the directories /root and /home, but if I restored say /usr, would I have
all my old programs again...this is what I would like, but is this correct.
If any of you are using tape drives...what systems do you use.

I am using tar at the moment...is this the best choice? I can retrieve single
files this way, but is there alternatives?

The tape unit size is 14Gig, but this is with compression of 2:1, how do I
get this compression, do I have to tar -zcvf for example. Is this a bad idea
though?

Sorry if this is basic stuff, but my only experiance up to now is Windoze
backup software at home (no longer an option) and the use of Unix tape drives
for the use of data transfer at work (8mm and 4mm) and we just tar the data
to the tape.

Thanks in advance.
