[expert] hostname questions (again)

Our server is about to be connected to the Internet through a dialup
modem. Naive question:
Is it OK to give our network/server any old domain name? To the
outside world we will be the domain set by our ISP, but can I set the
domain in our LAN to something like smith.jones?
