Thanks.  When I reinstalled Aurora it automatically put in the correct? monitor rpm.  
It fails to put an 
initscipt in rc.d, which is "obviously" the problem.  I have played with the 
framebuffer kernel and 
added 0x317 to lilo.conf to give me 16bit colour on boot and then the screen is blank 
throughout the 
boot process - presumably because Aurora is not running.  Would you be so kind as to 
send me a copy of 
/etc/rc.d/init.d/aurora if you have it?  I am not inclined to reinstall and ruin my 
config in the 
hope that fixes it.  Thanks.
