I've been asked to post something regarding verifying md5sums for
downloaded ISOs, so here goes. It's very easy. When you download an
ISO from any of the mirror sites, there will be a file called
"md5sums". When you download the ISOs, download this file as well.
For instance, if downloading from
sunsite.uio.no/pub/Linux/Mandrake/iso, you would download these three
files: Mandrake80-ext.iso, Mandrake80-inst.iso, and md5sums.
Make sure all three files are in the same directory and then excute:
md5sum -c md5sums
This will read the md5 value from the md5sums file and compare it to
the md5 value gathered from the ISO. It will tell you whether or not
the md5sum for the ISO is the same as that listed in the md5sums file.
Hope that helps those who need it, and for those who know all of this
already, please ignore it.
One note: I'm not subscribed to newbie@, so if you have questions
others will be able to help clarify if this isn't enough, or you can
email me directly.
