Hi.

I have seen a couple of people ask about getting pcmcia cards using the
rtl8139 driver to work in Mandrake 8.0. I don't know if my experience
actually relates to this problem since it does not deal with pcmcia cards,
but it does involve the same driver so it may spark some new ideas.

Yesterday I upgraded a relatively new machine from LM 7.2 to 8.0.
Everything went fine except that on the reboot after the upgrade the network
was not reachable. I searched through the new Control Center and found that
all I had to do was hit the connect button on the connection dialog and it
worked fine.

I rebooted again to test it and found again that the network was
unreachable. Thankfully I paid attention to the messages during the boot
process this time. When it came to starting eth0, it said something like:
"modprobe: could not find module eth0".

Again in the Control Center I could bring up the network, so I started
comparing info shown
in the Control Center with that from /etc/modules.conf. The line in question
from modules.conf was "alias eth0 rtl8139". However, the driver listed in
the Control Center was "8139too". So I replaced "rtl8139" with "8139too" in
modules.conf, rebooted and voila! The network came up right away.

As I said, I don't know if any of this pertains to the problems with
pcmcia cards, but I hope that it helps.
