Hmmm...  I've been doing a bit of suffering in this area recently; sounds like
something like slip is calling for a module (in /lib/modules/<kernel
version>/???  and not finding it or not liking it.
 /etc modules.conf  or conf.modules  - tells it what modules to load
for what devices. Try <man depmod>

also /lib/modules/<kernel version/modules.dep tells the system what modules
need what other modules as well, if you follow me.
