Benjamin,

Thanks for your efforts and persistence in sorting this out.

I have some questions that you or someone else might be able to answer:

1. Will the rpms install / work with XFree86.3.x.x? (It looks like the
files you listed include only XFree86-4.0.3. One of my machines will
only work with XFree86-3.x.x because it has an SiS 5597 video chipset on
board.)

2. I upgraded one of my Mandrake 7.2 installations to kde 2.1. There
are some problems -- it does not work 100% correctly. Do you think I
can use the rpms to upgrade from my current installation to kde 2.1.1,
or should I make a "clean" reinstallation of Mandrake 7.2 and start from
there?

Aside: There has been some speculation that the XFree86-4.0.3 drivers
for SiS will work with the SiS 5597. Can anybody actually confirm
this? (If there is misinformation, I contributed to it -- I asked on
the XFree mailing list about SiS 5597 drivers for 4.0.3. Someone
responded saying they believed the 4.0.3 driver worked for the SiS 5597
because there were multiple references to the SiS 5597 in the driver
source code. I don't believe that person actually tried it, and I never
actually tried it, but I passed the same information to someone else (on
the cooker list IIRC). Sorry, my mistake!

Thanks,
Randy Kramer
