Sometime last year I was coming close to the breaking point with Nutscrape,
it was so bloomin' unstable. I figured I'd have to try out all the other
browsers to find SOMETHING halfway usable.
Then I turned off Java and Javascript (I already had load images turned off).
I also quit running X on the laptop - now I use it as an application server,
if you will, with the DISPLAY set somewhere else. This makes the puny
32Meg (remember when that was a lot of memory?) of my laptop usable...
Anyway, back to the changes I made in my operating environment:
I shoulda written down when I did that, because I've not had any cpu burns
out of netscape this year, as far as I can recall. Here, let me see
what version of netscape it is... Hmm, indeed its 4.76. So, its not
a version difference. Maybe its memory, lack of fighting with X for
resources, and my being more careful....

One thing I noticed - NEVER EVER interrupt anything netscape is doing if
its loading java or javascript. Even simply letting another window cover
(or uncover) ANY netscape window while any other netscape window is
busy figuring out java* will likely break it. (IMHEWBM (*))
I've also noticed that it sometimes seems to go away and think stupid
thoughts (apparently ;-) when getting 'complex' pages (whatever THAT
means ;-) - all netscape windows are 'frozen' while it figures out
where to put what. If your machine is ALSO into heavy paging/swapping/
whaver-ing you will tend to see this behaviour more often, as I
recall.

Definately let us know!
