Windows passes authentication information to Samba upon a connection
attempt.
This means that the USERNAME and PASSWORD you used to log into Windows is
passed to Samba in (normally) encrypted form.
New versions of Samba DO NOT need the "plaintext" registry patch for the
Windows machines...
If Samba users with the same name and password have not been set up, then it
rejects the connection with the error message you saw.
Go to your Linux box and type
smbclient -L SAMBAHOST -U WINUSERNAME
and samba should prompt you for a password. Enter the correct password for
the WINDOWS user you have "created" under Samba. If it rejects this, you
haven't done your homework. You need to create SAMBA users with SMBADDUSER.
Note that SAMBAHOST is the NETBIOS/Hostname name you assigned your samba
server, while WINUSERNAME is the VALID Samba user account you have created.
In turn this has nothing to do with actual shares. You can control which
users have access to which shares by options in the /etc/smb.conf file...

Subject: [expert] Samba Question
I am using Mandrake 7.2. I just configured samba, and on any of my windows
clients i can now see the server, but when i double click on it, windows
gives me an error sayinga that "windows can not find the computer or share
name". I know i havent really gave that much information, but does anyone
know what the problem could be. I also tried doing a smbclient command and
got a connection failed.
Thanks.
Ira
