Hi,
I've just finished installing (again...) mdk7.2 and at boot, it says
that
it failed to initialize my NIC. i use DHCP. I'm trying to share my inet
connection between windows and linux with ICS on my winbox. everything works
under windows, 2 computers in a lan using dhcp. The 2 computers can talk,
ping, share drives and inet connection, etc... in windows. When i try the
following command it says that the *device is currently in use:
ifconfig -a --> shows a lo device and an eth0. But the eth0 shows no IP.
ifconfig eth0 up --> shows the error*
I won't touch my network settings until i have further information so
my
actual configuration is right after the installation (if that can help...).
All i did was set my NIC to dhcp during installation.
Thanks!
PS: Some people wrote that with this configuration i can manage to make it
work cuz it worked on their side...
The last message i received about this config was this one:
If you don't have a heavily modified Mandrake system, the easiest way to get
this to work is to reinstall. Do the following.
0. I presume you have a working NIC on your Mandrake box and an ethernet
cable to your Windows box, maybe via a hub. If not, correct this first.
1. As above, setup your Windows box to use dhcp
2. Copy off any Mandrake stuff you want to preserve (another partition, a
backup device, etc.)
3. Note the host name used by your Windows PC (right click on Network
Neighborhood, select identity tab. If you have Microsoft File and Printer
Sharing enabled, and you want to use the Windows printer, note the Share
name
and group name you are using.
4. Reinstall mandrake. During install,
in the networking section, give it the Windows host name and select dhcp.
in the printers section in addition to whatever printer you use on linux,
select the samba printer option. Don't enter a user name or password.
Note,
you must backup via the lefthand tabs to do more than one printer. The
install script moves on immediately to "root password".
5. Boot the system and restore your backed up data.
Should work like a charm. This is how I'm working right now (WinME PC with
att cable connection, linux connection using Netgear NIC and hub,
installation as above).
If reinstall is not possible for you, send me mail offline and I'll send you
a copy of my networking stuff in /etc, and you can do this manually, except
that I can't tell you how to setup the NIC, since Mandrake install did that
for me automatically.

Also Here are my physical connections:
I have 1 nic is each computer. I'm sharing a dial-up connection. I know it
sucks but i ain't got cable here. They're both set to use dhcp and Each one
is plug to a hub. That's about it..
