Sounds like the new modem is acting just fine, and the problem may
be within your lines. 115000 is what your modem will show provided
you set it for max connection rate of 115000. Certain modems
require in the init string W2 (for my Supra) to show the correct
speed, and not the max set by your dialer.

I just purchased a 3Com US Robotics 56K Faxmodem (V.90 and x2).  My Mandrake
7.2 installation finds the modem and connects with it but connection is at
26400 baud.

It is not the phone lines because my old 33K modem (that it is supposed to
replace) connects at 115000.  Could it be that the v.90 and x2 protocols
need to be installed under linux and have not?  There is no linux mentioned
on the CD that came with the modem.
