Well, for starters, what are your network settings: What's your subnet mask? If it is 255.255.255.0 (typical class C subnet), then you won't see your school server unless you have the correct default gateway set. What is the IP of your default gateway? Obviously, the gateway _must_ be in the same subnet as your laptop, or you will never actually find it. Can you traceroute to your default gateway? Can you traceroute to any IP (like the school server) outside the gateway?
