I just installed Mandrake 7.1 on a Sony VAIO PCG-F350 laptop, which uses both the NeoMagic video and audio chipsets. The XFree86 version 4.0 configuration doesn't automatically produce a configuration file that uses the NeoMagic driver. If you install 7.1 on a system that uses the NeoMagic video chipset, check /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to be sure, in the section "Device" (under the Graphics device section), the "Driver" entry says "neomagic" instead of "vga." Otherwise you'll get an 8-bit color depth (blech). Cheers, Phil "Reality, like truth and beauty, is in the eye of the beholder."
