When I boot Linux on my laptop with an external monitor attached, the
character mode part of the boot process goes smoothly, but as soon as it
tries to start X, the screen goes blank like the refresh rate is out of
range. If I then transfer the display back to the built-in monitor nothing
changes. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to blow away the X server, and when init
restarts it (run level 5) all is well.

Then get this, if I transfer the X display to the same external monitor, it
works perfectly. Unfortunately because of the way that xdm works, (X server
is restarted), it means that I have to jump through this hoop every time I
log out/in.

The laptop is a Dell Latitude LS with the NeoMagic 256AV, but I've had this
problem on every laptop I've installed Linux on. I've just put up with it so
far because it hasn't been that important to me, but I'm preparing to ditch
windows completely and this is the last obstacle!

Any ideas?

TIA,

Tony
