My turn for a few problems =)

First:

I recently put together an Oracle server running Mandrake 6.1. I have moved
to a Cooker kernel (2.2.17-0.16mdk) to close some security holes caused by
2.2.13 and because Oracle requires that some of the kernel parameters be
tweaked before compiling.

Nearly everything works fine - though I have noticed some peculiar behaviour
that concerns me:

Occasionally when logging out of KDE, the screen will blank completely. You
can wait a long time and nothing will happen. If you CTRL-ALT-F1 you get the
console from which X was started; if you CTRL-ALT-F2 you get an alternate
console. Now, if you CTRL-ALT-F7 you get the kdm login screen again (in
other words, X works again for some reason).

I really have no good idea what might be causing this - does this sound
familiar to anyone?

Second:

I am using apcupsd to operate the UPS; in the event of power failure the
daemon attempts to notify all logged in users via "wall" (write all). For
some strange reason, this doesn't work, even when all users have logged in
through a tty and when they have mesg set to 'y'.

This means they don't get any warning on shutdown (the shutdown executes
normally and all the notifications appear in the system log).

Using wall from the command line doesn't work either, even as root.

Any ideas?

Stephen
