I had the same problem (it sounds like) on a couple of different systems on new installs, one of RedHat 6.2, and one of Mandrake 7.1. I resolved the problem (after much digging through archives of this mailing list, and other resources on the net) by loading the "ide-scsi" module. Not knowing intuitively (by divine intervention, I guess) that CD burning and Linux has deeply entrenched SCSI roots, I didn't automatically know to check for this. Why distributions like Mandrake and RedHat don't configure themselves for this automatically if you select "CD Burning" packages, and you don't have a SCSI adapter, I don't know.
