Dear friends: I sent the letter below to Mr. Darren Nickerson a few days ago. I received a response clearly indicating that he is extremely busy. I fully understand and appreciate this and do not wish to bother him any further. I am certainly grateful to him for his generous help in the past. I subscribed to the hylafax-users mailing list about a week or so ago and received confirmation to that effect. However, I have yet to receive a single message from the list. I would like, if possible, to seek help through the list. If that is not possible, and apparently it is not, may I ask one of you gurus who is in any way familiar with Hylafax if you could please lend me a helping hand. Thank you so very much. Benjamin BEGIN Dear Webmaster: Several months ago, Mr. Darren Nickerson, one of the leading programmers associated with Hylafax, was kind enough to help me configure my Hylafax. At the time, Hylafax was not a part of the Linux-Mandrake distribution. Even after installation and configuration, I had trouble making Hylafax work because I use the infamous U. S. Robotics 56k ext faxmodem (which, as Mr. Nickerson himself admits, is superb with data but a real problem with fax transmission. It is supposed to run as a Class 2 fax, but, in fact, it can only, hopefully, run as a Class 1 fax modem. The problem is not with Hylafax but with Robotics itself. So Mr. Nickerson configured my modem to run as a Class 1 modem. He was very helpful, but still I failed to actually send a fax. In frustration, I decided at the time to forget it. Now that Hylafax is installed automatically on LM 7.1, I would like to try using it again as a Class 1 faxmodem and use it with my Gfax front-end, which gives me the option of sending faxes using Hylafax. I have naturally kept a copy of Mr. Nickerson's configuration. What I would appreciate is advice from someone on the list (I signed up for the Hylafax-users list weeks ago but I have yet to get any messages) concerning two simple matters related to the config file: 1) Exactly where do you put it. I know it goes somewhere in the /var/spool/fax/ or /var/spool/fax/etc or /var/spool/fax/config directories. But, unfortunately, I can't recall where Mr. Nickerson instructed me to put the file originally (I have since had to reinstall my Linux). 2) Do I keep the name "config.ttyS1" or do I need to rename it? If so, what is the exact name that I should change it to. Hopefully, with the right name for the config file and putting it in the right directory, I should be able to send a fax with Gfax, using Robotics 56k ext as a Class 1 modem. If I fail, and it's clearly an unresolvable problem caused by Robotics, then I will not pursue the matter any further. I just never had the chance to find out. I am just an ordinary user, but it would be nice to be able to fax out of my computer. I have tried to contact Mr. Nickerson directly but perhaps he is too busy to deal with this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much. Benjamin -- Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net
