In most cases when you see the pause when bringing up eth0 it is the system
querying your dhcp server for an ip address.
As to your second question just go into linuxconf and disable sendmail on
startup. Unless you are using it there is no need to run the deamon. Sendmail
is checking for configured  pop mail servers and that is why it "seems" to be
hung for a bit on bootup
