I installed October GNOME on Mdk 6.1 (from RH rpms, taken from gnome
ftp site), and quite happy with it. Note:
you will have to upgrade couple of other packages - otherwise, rpm
will complain about "usatisfied dependencies"; I ended up installing
some of GNOME packages with --nodeps, and not installing some of them
at all (gdm required upgrading pam, and I do not like to mess with
critical things like initscripts or pam unless I have to).
As for GNOME/KDE
option: just install GNOME - do not change anything in the
setup. You will still have KDM as login manager (default for Mdk), and
it allows you to choose either KDE ot GNOME when you login. Of course,
if you insist, you can also replace KDM with GDM....
