You might be right :-(
If so, it would also mean (as I see it) that the problem would not
be in mount itself, rather in the FS code involved (vfat and/or fat ?)

As to trying other modes, I'll give it a try, but 555 is definitely 
NOT satisfactory to me, as I'm trying to get rid of the exec bit ...
