Actually, you just dropped the piece I was missing - that old-style digests were the default (which *would* explain the reported behavior if a recieving MUA doesn't do digests). There's lots of pieces of both MH and exmh lore that have leaked out of my neurons over the past 3 decades (Yes, I just checked - I have MH folders with mail back to at least Dec 1988) just because they're corners I don't use myself. (The scary part is how much of 3 and 4 decade old lore *has* stuck around...)
