Yes, the remote gateway does advertise pipelining. As far is i remember,
exim does youse pipelining as a default when sending e-mails. I need to ask
if they forward their mail internally.
You can disable pipelining when sending to specific hosts, with
hosts_avoid_pipelining

The question is why server has dropped connection. Probably this
connection was timed out -- on the server's side, not on the client's one.
Traffic dump from both ends could make this situation clean.
I think that this is the next step ...
"pcap" is the string to search documentation for.
