يعتبر موضوع صنع القرار واتخاذه من الموضوعات ذات الأهمية الكبرى التي شغلت بال العلماء الاجتماعيين وبخاصة المضطلعين منهم بعلم الاجتماع أو الادارة أو النفس أو السياسة. وتنطلق الأهمية من أمرين أساسيين: أمر أكاديمي وأمر مجتمعي ويتمثل الأمر (الأكاديمي) في افتقار الدراسات الاجتماعية بصفة عامة الى دراسات معمقة ومفصلة عن مثل هذا الموضوع، كما يتمثل الأمر المجتمعي في أهمية هذا اللون من المجتمعات بالنسبة للقائمين على أمر المجتمعات مخططين أو منفذين مع تسابق المجتمعات خاصة النامية منها في الدخول في مضمار التنمية والتحديث وثمة فرق بين كل من صنع القرار Decision Making واتخاذ القرار Decision Taking.
