I have two computers.
a Desktop and a laptop, both running Windows 7 Enterprise, Service Pack 1
(64 bit), and Excel 2010. (version 14.0.7162.500 (32 bit)

I have an Excel application I which I have sheet templates that are used to
create manufacturing documents.
(from 2 to 394 sheets)
The contents of these sheets are saved to an Oracle Database, and retrieved
to re-create the document.

I have a situation in which I use Excel "symbols".
In this case: the diameter symbol ( Ø )

DRILL (1) Ø.125, #184 HOLE

For YEARS, this technique worked flawlessly.
But recently, on the LAPTOP ONLY (still works fine on the desktop)
the diameter symbol gets saved as a question mark:

DRILL (1) ?.125, #184 HOLE

VBA says that the ascii character is #216 when it is saved, but it
retrieves as #63

again, only on the laptop.

I'm considering having the I.T. department reinstall excel, or even rebuild
my laptop.
But I'd prefer to determine what is CAUSING this, in case another user of
my application encounters the same issue.

any ideas?

thank you,

Paul
