Well, all I can say is, using Excel 2010:

If my original file type is .xls
and I run a macro with:

    ActiveWorkbook.SaveCopyAs Filename:="C:\temp\VBA\" & Range("E5").Value &
".xlsm"

It creates a file with a .xlsm extension, but when I open it I get:
"Excel cannot open the file (filename) because the file format or file
extension is not valid.
Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches
the format of the file."

If I change the file extension to .xls
then the file opens fine.

Therefore, I conclude that the file TYPE does not change, regardless of what
file EXTENSION you use.

It would be the same as simply changing the name from .docx to .xlsm and
expecting the Word Document to magically become an Excel workbook.

I suspect that your contact in England is starting with a file type .xlsm.
instead of using SaveCopyAs to change the file type.
