There IS a way to get to the data in an excel file without opening it, but I've not worked with that much. Mainly because it's very convenient to simply have Excel disable display updating. In which case a macro can open hundreds of excel files and file/save them as text files in a relatively short period of time.
To write a macro for this, we'd need to know some things. Where are the files you want to process? How do you want to identify them?
