just so you know: 3 hours 48 minutes is NOT 3.48 hours.
it's 3.8 hours... If you're wanting the hours/minutes expressed as a decimal: =A1*24 That is: if your time (3:48) is an actual Excel TIME and not a text string. Keep in mind that Excel doesn't store "date" and "time" it is a number that represents the number of days and fractions of days since 1/1/1900. So, today (10/15/2010) at 3:48 am in Excel is: 40466.1583333333 but you can change how excel DISPLAYS this number. You can choose to DISPLAY it as a date, or just the hour or, using the format Cells -> Number tab, Custom, changing it to: mm.dd.yyyy hh.mm.ss will display 10.15.2010 03.48.00 ------------------------- it all depends on what you're trying to do with this conversion. If you're trying to display 3:48 as an hour and fraction of hour, and then you choose to add 4.12 and hope to get 8.0 It's not going to happen if you CHANGE the time to 3.48 instead of 3.8 Now, if you change the DISPLAY FORMAT, excel will still understand that 48 minutes + 12 minutes = 1 hour and do the math properly. I think this is a case where someone has posted a question without giving the context. There's been a couple of answers posted that answer the QUESTION, but the answers require an ASSUMPTION on our part of what is your INTENT. You ASKED how you could write "time in decimal format". But the example you gave is NOT what I would consider the decimal format of time. because to ME, 3:48 is NOT the equivalent of 3.48 Take a look at the answers you've been given and see if they help you toward the results you require...
