Hey, I understand that you need to find out unique values, but it is very necessary that you want to use countif ... coz this is a better way to do it. Sort all values in column A and then use a simple if formula =IF (A2=A3,"",1) ... to get unique values.
Please let me know if that does not serve the purpose.
