I've occasionally seem message pain freezes and the only way out is to restart Evolution. I've always put it down to specific messages causing problems and I get round it by disabling the preview and deleting the bad message - it's always some inconsequential advertising thing and I suspect it's to do with bad HTML. It happens so rarely these days though.
