Especially if /tmp is a tmpfs containig a lot of small files and/or
links, inodes might be the culprit.

By default tmpfs is half of the available memory, so it might be just
around (2210MiB+6971MiB)/2=4590.5MiB
                           4590.5MiB/1024=4.48GiB . That isn't much.
