It's not Nautilus, it's the Gnome file chooser - Nautilus is a
completely separate program.

As for your import: in Nautilus, right click on the file you are trying
to import and select "Properties", what does it say is the "Type:" of
the file?
It says:
mailbox-file (application/mbox)
