Hi Everyone.

My name is Jacq. I am new to this, this is my first post and I am new to
the overall scheme
of things in linux, getting help, please forgive me if i am doing this
wrong and please also
help me/ tell me what i should have done. I am quite enjoying learning
this and would like
to get better. Thank you.

## this is the first time i posted a broadcast email any place. i am not
actually sure what to expect or how this works. I am not expecting
instant answers but in case someone responds right away, I am needing to
leave in 20 minutes, and will be back in a few hours. i will probably be
hitting send button at 11:00 am MST. I am also thinking i will get the
answers in my email -- so if i am supposed to be going to some place or
doing something else to find them, please let me know what/where that is.
and probs in painful details as i am self learning so my knowledge is
sketchy and all over the place. thank you. i did ask to be part of the
group, i am now waiting for an instructional email, so this may not send ?

My goal:
in the evolution contacts, i am importing my unorganized mess of contact
files and backups that will end up to be over a hundred thousand contacts
when i am done - and probably less than five thousand will be not
duplicated. However, i have pulled contacts and backups contact files from
assorted devices and software to get them all nice and organized, then
didn't, now a year or so later i have those files plus a bunch of new ones
-- which means the updates and changes to contacts that happened on one
device did not happen on all of them, or the ancient files. so, i
definately do not want to delete any duplicates, I want to merge them, and
merge the data. ideally, merge the data with notes that says the dates of
whatever changes, but i know that isn't likely.

what i have done:
### installed (actually it may have been default with this distro --
started with live fedora 23 to install and then did the upgrades using
dnf)..the evolution.
### imported a few files - beyond easy and shocking that it is importing in
mulitple .ff with seemingly no problems which was reason i put this task to
the side for so long -- importing contacts into other software caused me to
lose a ton of data and contacts when it didn't import into the proper
fields and in my trying to fix i ended up importing contacts into wrong
contacts. i havn't fully investigated yet, but so far it is awesome.
### manually created a few contacts in assorted address books-- when i
create a duplicate in the same address book it tells me when i want to save
contact and gives an option to merge. good.

problem:
I am not able to find any way to find duplicates, and/or merge contacts
within the address books. I went into a contact and changed something, put
it back so i could save it, then it asked me if i still wanted to do this
as i had already a similar contact but it didn't ask me if i wanted to
merge the contact. there will be over a hundred thousand contacts when i
am done, doing this by hand would be just not going to happen but i thought
i could figure out what/how to do something by doing that the first time.
I learned it didn't show me the 4 other duplicates, so, even if it worked,
it would not have merged more then two at a time.

solutions that have failed thus far:
i found some great sites and followed through on their possibles, either
until it was no longer viable or it just didn't work. Although in doing
this, it seems as the developers of the evolution mail/contact/pim seem to
be quite socaiable and wanting the feedback, but the sites were years old
so i thought it best to find a way to do that in evolution site.
i am learning so my answer could and proably is just so easy and right in
front of me, i am just not seeing it, so if yes, then sorry.
what i think is the only relevant stuff left of what i have done ( relevant
in that it is current and i am getting stuck, rather then seeing it won't
work ).
## the evolution software seems to come already installed with a plugin for
duplicates for some people, this is not the case for me and someone said to
install other dependencies first, then i will somehow end up with the
plugin? so, i tried to update my evolution, then i tried to install the
SCon which told me to install the dependencies for that, .. This is my
thought, when i did a update to my fedora, it told me that in its updating
it got to evolution stuff and then got a 404 error. so this is making me
think that i am not able to update, but i got a successful updatge message
at end. i am thinking this is a potential problem that is probably what i
need to be fixing, but i can't find on any site that anyone had this
problem in past/current/ ever. so. i am asking if you could help me to fix
that, or better understand what it is saying etc. i am going to attach two
files. one is the paste of the update on the terminal. so that will be
file

 touch ~/term.output/evolution.update.404

and i am not sure if the next file is relevant but i am including because i
know how to do this and i really have no idea what i am doing but trying to
learn it, so i am just throwing out what i can and hoping it sticks.
thanks.

 touch ~/term.output/dmidecode

thank you. sorry, need to leave. already late. back about 2:ish pm
MST. Thank you!
Thank you !!

Cheers,
Jacq.
