it is this gtk+ bug:

and even evolution doesn't use that function anymore, it uses some CSS
foo to workaround the problem, it doesn't work for some reason.
Either I fix it straight away, or if someone volunteers to file a new
bug against evolution, thus it's not forgotten, then it'll be nice too.

I think a nice long-term solution would be to show the search bar only
if it's searching and "collapse" it when not. That would give cleaner
interface as well. Just an idea.
