Hi, JFTR I downgraded gnome-themes-standard from 3.20 to 3.18 and I used Adwaita from 3.18 with Evolution 3.20.0 to 3.20.4. The reason to do so, is that Adwaita from 3.20 breaks GTK2 apps and 3.18 at least doesn't cause issues for GTK3 apps regarding my needs. The OP seems to need GTK2 [1]. It's a known issue that with GTK3 most available themes are broken. Not only people who made themes are not interested in GTK3 anymore and stop to follow upstream's idiotic changes, also a lot of coders switched to Qt or discontinued their software [2]. There are still a lot of good GTK2 and Qt apps and while the amount of GTK3 apps independent of GNOME project decreases, the amount of other apps increases. It doesn't help much, if somebody fix an Evolution issue caused by a theme, if using the latest Adwaita breaks a high amount of other apps. IMO the date to drop all GTK3 apps is close for most power users.
