the old instance has source files with this structure:

[Collection]
  [Mail Composition]
  [Mail Account]
  [Mail Transport]

the new instance has these source files:

[Mail Account]
  [Mail Composition]
  [Mail Transport]

the old instance "Collection" file had this section:

[Authentication]
Host=
Method=none
Port=0
RememberPassword=true
User=
ProxyUid=system-proxy
CredentialName=

which looked troublesome, so I tried deleting it and found that the
connection error on startup went away, and no new problems have
appeared. Thank you for pointing me towards the sources directory.
