This problem is strictly a weird interaction between evolution and nVidia and other proprietary drivers used by Ubuntu 14.04.2 64-bit. I can do the same thing with evolution running under same OS on a PC that uses standard drivers and the problem does not occur. Similar problems with ics calendar causing evolution to crash went away with one of the numerous Ubuntu software updates.
