It's a serious question and not meant to be the prompt for a long discussion on distros, but if your current one is not providing you with what you need, then there are plenty more out there. If you want to stick with Lubuntu, then you may be better of looking for a PPA to use rather than trying to compile it yourself. I know very little about the Ubuntu arena but I'm sure someone out there will already have done the work for you. Finally, there are some pages out there giving you hints on how to build Evo from source. Paul Smith has a page here http://mad-scientist.net/welcome-to-the-lab/gnome-evolution-from-source/ but I think it hasn't been updated for a while, so may well be out of date. But be aware that building a Gnome app like Evolution requires a lot of libraries - if you are building a version different to your currently installed Gnome version then you will probably have to do more than just compile Evolution and its components.
