No. As others have said, Evolution depends on parts of the Gnome infrastructure but as long as your distro supports a decent package manager they will all be installed automatically when you install Evo. As an example, I never use Gnome and have always used Evo under KDE. One caveat: you may find that your desktop doesn't automatically open the gnome-keyring (which Evo uses for storing passwords) so Evo will ask you to type in the keyring password once per login session.
