Hi Robert, in my case, it was stopping when it was connecting to a server
which did not have the minimum requirements (ie exch 2010), it appears that
our server farm has different versions of Exch Servers. So I edited the
/etc/hosts to point to a server which is for sure Exchange 2010.

Another issue I faced is that it does not actually stop, but the EWS
message download is extremely slow, ie takes 15+ minutes to download a
10meg email) and during this timeframe, the EWS new message notifications
stop as well.

See if your problem could be related to those. I've opened bug reports
these issues if you'd like to follow.
