It's not necessary (though it is possible if you prefer it that way).

Otherwise, set:

File->Preferences-><account>->Receiving Options->Automatically
Synchronize Remote Mail Locally.

Note that this is really intended for enabling disconnected access to
your IMAP mail. Most people wouldn't bother taking a backup since that's
what the server is for, but YMMV.
