You should encrypt your home directory. You can either encrypt the
whole partition that hosts the home directory or encrypt only your
home directory. There are pro and cons for each of method. If you
encrypt the whole partition you will need to reformat the disk. I
think you can encrypt your home directory on fly, but never tried it.
There are lots of webpages, blogs, etc on the web. Google for "ubuntu
encrypt home". A good starting point it:

Regardless which method you use, you need to remember to shutdown the
computer completely, not to leave in hibernate mode.
